Anyone telling you that parent’s rights are being taken away or that secrets are being kept, doesn’t understand State or Federal Education Law and isn’t knowledgeable about our current practices of involving parents in every part of their student’s education. They aren’t telling you the truth.

PARENTAL RIGHTS:
1. To observe classroom(s)
2. To meet with teachers or administrators
3. To volunteer on campus
4. To be notified of absences
5. To receive testing/grading results
6. To request a school
7. To have a safe learning environment
8. To examine curriculum and instructional materials
9. To be informed of student problems or progress
10. To receive English Language Learner support toward literacy
11. To receive English language Learner progress reports
12. To have access to their student’s school records
13. To have info concerning their student’s academic progress
14. To be informed about school rules and procedures
15. To be informed when their student is at academic risk
16. To receive information regarding psychological testing and ability to deny such testing
17. To refuse any assessment of home life
18. To participate in Parent Advisory Committees
19. To question any part of their student’s record
20. To provide written consent of any behavioral, mental or emotional assessment
PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITES:
1. Monitoring attendance
2. Ensuring homework is completed on time
3. Encouraging extra- and co-curricular activities
4. Monitoring television viewing
5. Working with their student at home with learning activities
6. Volunteering in the classroom or student activities
7. Participating in decisions related to the education of their own child or the total school program as appropriate

The notice required pursuant to Education Code 48980 shall be sent at the beginning of each academic year and may be provided either by regular mail, in electronic form when so requested by the parent/guardian, or by any other method normally used to communicate with parents/guardians in writing. (Education Code 48981, 48982)

In accordance with the law (Education Code 49069; Family Code 3025). Persons granted absolute access to their student’s records include parents and guardians of students younger than 18 years of age.

Only students over 18 can change their student record without parent permission
Parents can change their (under 18) student’s record if the parent feels the record is:
1. Inaccurate
2. An unsubstantiated personal conclusion or inference
3. A conclusion or inference outside of the observer's area of competence
4. Not based on the personal observation of a named person with the time and place of the observation noted
5. Misleading
6. In violation of the privacy or other rights of the student
